Why Group Therapy?
Group therapy offers several benefits that individual therapy alone cannot. The first is getting to connect with other people who are facing the same problems as you. When we go to group therapy, we don’t have to feel alone anymore. The struggles we face, and the thoughts and feelings we have about them, become something that connects us, rather than isolating us. It can feel like a relief to have a space where other people really understand what you’re going through–because they’ve been there too.
Another special thing about group therapy is that you get a sounding board of caring individuals to help you solve problems. Not only do you get the benefit of the therapist’s support, but you also can connect with and learn about other people who have first-hand experience dealing with what you’re facing. The support and encouragement we receive in group therapy can be one of the most rewarding parts of participating.
In group therapy, you also get to work on interpersonal problems in a safe space. As you get to know other group members, you’ll find that the behaviors and communication styles you use in your relationships outside of therapy will show up here too. The therapist and other group members can provide honest and nonjudgmental feedback as well as the safe space you need to develop and practice new patterns. Everyone works together to help each other develop new ways of interacting that we can use to better communicate our needs to loved ones and improve our relationships outside of therapy.
At Inner Wellbeing Therapy, all of our groups are in-person and offered in the community setting, such as in parks and community centers in the Baltimore area. Reach out today to see if our group therapy is right for you!

What to Expect in Group
Therapy
When a small group of people meet with a therapist to work through issues together, that’s group therapy. Each group member is welcomed into a safe, nonjudgmental space where they can talk about their struggles and experiences and receive support and guidance from the group.
Before you get started, you’ll meet with the therapist on your own. You’ll be able to share about what kind of issues you’re facing, and get to ask any questions you need answered. The therapist will help you feel ready for your first group session, and support you throughout the experience.
It’s normal to feel nervous before starting group therapy, as you can expect to meet between four and six new people at the group. It’s important to remember that everyone else likely feels very similar to you, and those first-day jitters go away quickly once we get started.
Usually, group therapy starts with an activity or discussion. The therapist will lead the group through conversations that are designed to help you explore your issues, reflect on how you interact with others and observe how you feel about yourself.
These conversations will invite you to share your thoughts and feelings, and in return, you’ll receive not only support, but also insightful and honest feedback from the therapist and other group members. Often, giving and receiving this feedback is the most rewarding part of therapy, because it helps us understand ourselves better and learn more about ourselves, while also having a positive impact on others.
In group therapy, we also learn and practice new coping strategies and skills. Whether it’s creative expression, meditation, communication skills, stress management tactics, or other topics, sharing these activities with others can make it easier to put healthy behaviors into practice. Group therapy also offers accountability, with members supporting each other toward goals and helping each other celebrate progress.
You might learn how to navigate an argument or set a boundary, practice a new type of meditation, role play a challenging social situation, or learn how to cope with a bothersome worry. If the group therapy has a special focus, such as nature-based therapy or creative expression, that will be worked into every session.
Throughout these experiences, you’ll build relationships of trust with others. There is something special about connecting with others who really get what you are going through, and the understanding and acceptance we receive in the group can help us feel more accepting of ourselves in general. You might find that the relationships you build through group therapy become an important source of support and encouragement.
