Margaret Rasnake

RD, MPH

Welcome! I’m Maggie from MCR Nutrition, and I'm a Registered Dietitian and Clinical Eating Disorder Specialist for adolescents and young adults.

I graduated with honors from UC Berkeley with a Masters in Public Health Nutrition, and have years of experience as a Clinical Adolescent Eating Disorder Dietitian in the hospital setting. I believe that everyone deserves to have a healthy relationship with food and their body, and I’m committed to helping my clients achieve that.

I’m passionate about helping adolescents and young adults, because the changes we make now can set us up for lifelong wellness. I am sensitive to the unique challenges of eating disorder recovery for young women, gender-expansive and LGBTQIA+ folks, and am proud to provide the affirming and trauma-informed care that helps my clients thrive and overcome disordered eating.

When you work with me, you’ll receive expert dietary guidance that will help you develop healthy eating habits, leave behind painful patterns of disordered eating, manage other health conditions, and improve your physical wellness, as you learn the knowledge and skills you need to make lasting and sustainable changes in your life.

If you or your loved one is struggling with an eating disorder or other health and nutrition challenges, I’m here to provide the guidance and support needed for better health and wellbeing.

What's Nutritional Counseling Like?

When you first meet with a registered dietitian, you’ll start an in-depth conversation about your current eating habits, lifestyle, and health concerns. You’ll be invited to ask any questions you might have, and get to share your thoughts and experiences around your relationship with food.

You can expect to share about your medical and mental health history, your preferences and favorite foods, your exercise and sleeping patterns, and any food allergies or intolerances you may have.

Your dietitian will pay special attention to how these factors are related to your mental health, as well as your physical wellbeing. This information will help your dietitian create a personalized nutrition plan that is tailored to your specific needs, preferences and goals.

This plan may include recommendations for specific foods or nutrients to incorporate into your diet, as well as suggestions for meal planning and eating practices. If you’re coping with symptoms of an eating disorder, this will be tailored to your needs to help you reclaim your health, develop regular eating habits and establish a more positive body image.

In ongoing sessions, your dietitian will provide one-on-one support to help you actually implement the recommendations provided, tailoring the plan as you go according to your changing needs. You can expect to receive education and resources on healthy cooking techniques, stress management, intuitive eating, and even  food labeling and grocery shopping tips to help you put the plan into practice. The ongoing support and accountability can be a wonderful source of encouragement as you come to experience greater health, wellness, and self-acceptance.

Why Nutritional Counseling?

You might be asking, “Is working with a dietitian really going to help me with my mental health?” The answer is a big, resounding YES. One of the most significant ways a dietitian can support you is by helping you develop a healthy and balanced relationship with food.

Many people struggle with disordered eating patterns, and may have a lot of negative self-talk about food and their bodies. In a world where so much dangerous misinformation exists around dieting, a dietitian can help you develop a meal plan that ensures you are getting all the necessary nutrients for optimal physical and mental health, while tailoring it to your individual needs and preferences.

If you’re struggling with issues like restricting your food intake in order to change your body, your dietitian can help you work to let go of these patterns while providing you with exactly what you need to eat in order to reclaim your health. When there is so much stress and anxiety around eating, that clarity can be a huge relief.

A dietitian can also provide education and resources on how to incorporate mindful and intuitive eating practices into your routine. Mindful eating involves paying attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, as well as your emotional state, when making food choices. This can be especially helpful for those of us who may eat large amounts at one time when feeling stressed out, tired, or upset. By practicing mindful eating, you may be able to reduce stress and anxiety around food, and develop a more positive and accepting relationship with your body

In addition, a dietitian can help you identify any food sensitivities or intolerances that may be affecting your mood or energy levels. For example, if you have a gluten intolerance but are still consuming gluten, you may experience brain fog, irritability, and other symptoms that affect your mental health but won’t improve with therapy alone. By working with a dietitian to identify and eliminate these triggers, you may notice significant improvements in your overall mood and wellbeing.
